Why You"re Hitting Fat Shots And How To Stop Chunking

hitting a golf ball for beginnersEvery golfer hopes to avoid fat shots because they impact the score so negatively. And even worse, this shot can completely smash any player’s confidence. But the good news is that you can keep from playing fat shots by just taking some simple measures. As might be expected, golfers with little experience are usually the ones who are most likely to have this problem and will need to remedy it to improve their game. It is a habit and can be broken by anyone who is willing to improve and who has good help. Here are some ideas to help you figure out why you are hitting fat shots and the methods you can use to overcome chunking your shots.

How It Happens – Basically, a fat shot is one that is false. It happens when you are taking a shot and hit the ground before you hit the ball. This causes chunking and can be very discouraging.

Injury – Not only will you look silly in the eyes of your fellow golfers but, even worse, hitting the ground with your club can cause injuries to your wrist. This can be a big problem because if the injury is bad enough you may not be able to play golf for a long time.

Swing Position – Fat shots can be caused by the bottom of your swing arc being behind the ball.

Weight – If your weight is distributed unevenly that might be the reason you are taking fat shots. That is because if the position of your body is wrong this bad alignment will make playing the shot well a struggle.

Ball Position – The ball needs to be put in the right position if you want to avoid taking a fat shot. In particular, the ball should not be placed too far forward causing you to have to reach for it.

Backswing – Your club position should not be turned inward too far and it should not be at a distance from the target line. If you do this, your shot may be displaced.

Do Not Lean In – Many golfers commonly make the mistake of leaning into the ball and not keeping their head lowered. If you do this, you will have a fat shot.

Downswing – Make sure you keep a position in the center when you do your downswing. Too far to the right or to the left if you are left-handed, you will not make the shot. So make sure your position is steady and then shift your weight at the appropriate time.

Point of Impact – You should make sure about 80% of your body weight is on your front foot when you impact the ball.

Stand Properly – Make sure both of your feet are together and the ball is centered between them. This works very well in preventing fat shots.

Chest – It is important to let your body unwind slowly, like a coil, as you impact the ball.

Timing – If you are able to keep your eyes on the ball, you will hit a perfect shot every time. Also, make sure not to hit the ball so slowly that you lose your power or so quickly that the shot becomes unwieldy.

Swing – It is good to make your club swing more to the front of your body. If you do this you will have a more favorable angle and should make good contact with the ball.

Alignment Rod – When you are not sure how to take a shot and what your position should be it is often helpful to use an alignment rod. You will be amazed how quickly your shot improves when you begin practicing with one.

The real problem is that fat shots can be embarrassing and make it hard to a golfer to take the initiative when playing a match. But most experts think that chunking and fat shots are unrelated to skill level and instead are caused by a lack of attention and focus by the golfer. If you want to improve from being a novice golfer to an intermediate one, it is important to stop making this shot. And the answer is to practice! So follow this advice and you will be able to improve your game and will find yourself another step closer to mastering the basics of golf.
